Safeguarding is the ongoing work an organisation does to prevent harm and to respond well if something goes wrong. It includes:

• Prevention: safer recruitment, vetting checks, training, supervision, codes of conduct and safe environments.
• Protection: clear reporting routes, designated safeguarding roles, and safe handling of concerns.
• Accountability: records, audits, and evidence that procedures are followed.

Safeguarding applies to everyone involved in an organisation — not just the safeguarding lead. Staff, volunteers, trustees and leaders all have a role in keeping people safe.
