HAF Funding Safeguarding Checklist

Make sure they activity providers you support with funding have all the right safeguarding in place

Before approving activity providers onto your HAF preferred supplier list, it's crucial to verify their safeguarding credentials thoroughly

With thousands of children participating in HAF programmes across the UK, ensuring providers have proper vetting processes, up-to-date DBS checks, and comprehensive safeguarding policies isn't just a box-ticking exercise—it's fundamental to protecting children in their care.

Using a systematic verification approach, like our checklist, helps HAF coordinators reduce risks and maintain consistency across all providers. By mandating our digital verification passport, you can streamline these essential checks, saving up to 80% in time whilst maintaining the highest standards of safeguarding compliance.

Remember, as a HAF coordinator, you're not just approving activity providers—you're creating a trusted network of verified professionals who will be responsible for children's wellbeing during school holidays. Getting these checks right from the start helps build confidence with parents and ensures your HAF programme maintains the highest standards of safety and professionalism.

Our blog explains how activity providers should organise their safeguarding, which you also might find helpful. We have a quiz as well so you can test your own knowledge.

We highly recommend performing a Health Check by our Safeguarding Collective partners Cornerstone Safeguarding on activity providers you have concerns with.

How to use the checklist for your audit

HAF Safeguarding Checklist

  • Create your check list
Remember to ensure your list covers all your priorities. These may very from HAF to HAF. Whilst our template covers a lot of elements it's not a comprehensive list.

  • Rate your performance
The template is an efficient way to ensure you review all the important elements of safeguarding and, importantly, rate them as this will help the activity provider make improvements

The core benefit is that you will have confidence the activity providers you are supporting have the highest standards and you can ensure you have a safe HAF programme

Risk Scoring

  • Identify key risks
If you have identified any concerns with an activity provider, you could then evaluate the scale of risk to help decide whether to accept them on to your programme.

  • Scoring and action
The scoring system will help guide you on the severity of the risk whilst the activity provider puts steps in place to mitigate the risk. This will be useful feedback to them so they can improve the standard of their safeguarding.

Having a scored list helps ensure you provide a fair, equal and transparent evaluation to all activity providers wishing to be part of your programme.
