There are many misconceptions about DBS checks, far too many to discuss here, such as how long they are valid for, when you need a new one and who can apply for it.
In short, the most effective way of remaining checked, safe and ready is to register your DBS with the online update service
The service is becoming ever more popular, as in effect, if the registration is maintained, you should never need a new DBS again (although this may vary according to employers' policies).
There are some time restrictions as to when you can apply, but we highly recommend joining the update service
if you're within these time frames
The update service costs £13 per year (it's free for volunteer roles) and once consent is given by you it allows an organisation the ability to check the real time status of your DBS online. This means your DBS can be instantly verified and the process can be completed unlimited times.
It is normal for most organisations to renew your DBS every 3 years, but you'll get a status check with us every year and can request a further status check once during the 12 months of your subscription.
You'll need to upload your original DBS and provide consent (which is completed via the app) in order for us to complete the check.
